What the Heck is Wise Mind Parenting?
The truth is parenting is hard. And for countless reasons.
It’s especially difficult when raising a child who is prone to emotional dysregulation. Family interactions can quickly (sometimes 0-60!) become intense and messy, leaving parents feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and powerless.
The Idea Behind Wise Mind
The concept of Wise Mind comes from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-backed, skills-based treatment developed by psychologist Dr. Marsha Linehan for people who struggle with significant emotional and behavioral dysregulation. She introduced the idea that people have three states of mind:
Emotion Mind: When emotions are in the driver’s seat, hot and emotionally intense
Reason Mind: When logic and facts are in charge, cold and more calculated
Wise Mind: The place where emotion and thinking come together, cool and steady
Bringing Wise Mind Into Parenting
When applied to parenting, Wise Mind means integrating emotion and logic in a balanced and intentional way.
Parents who are connected to their Wise Mind can stay aware of what their child is feeling while also thinking clearly about how to respond. Instead of reacting in the heat of the moment, Wise Mind helps parents pause, stay grounded, and choose their next step more thoughtfully in a way that’s connected to their values and goals. Cool and steady.
From this place, parents are better able to:
- Regulate their own emotions
- Stay connected to their child
- Validate their child’s emotional experience
- Observe limits and boundaries
Wise Mind parenting helps families manage painful moments while keeping sight of the bigger picture—helping children move, over time, from simply surviving toward truly thriving.
